  • Africa Today - Fear of Pan-Africanism: propaganda war against united Africa

Kwame Nkrumah, the president of Africa’s first independent country, described Pan-Africanism as “The total liberation and unification of Africa under Scientific Socialism.” It is an ideology and movement that encourages the solidarity of Africans worldwide. It is based on the belief that unity is vital to economic, social, and political progress and aims to “unify and uplift” people of African descent. Leaders like Thomas Sankara of Burkina Faso and Patrice Lumumba of the Congo were assassinated by agents of the CIA because of their revolutionary Pan-African stance. Recent history shows that, as a movement, Pan-Africanism does not have the same force as it did during the anti-colonial struggles. The US has played a pivotal role in sabotaging the natural evolution of democratic African institutions if they did not suit the US agenda. • Africa Today - Western portrayal of Africans (P.1)

One of the strongest barriers to African liberation is the emancipation from mental slavery. Key to keeping Africans locked into an image of despair and unworthiness is the way the world's second largest continent is portrayed in the media. The dominant Western paradigm is that bad news sells. This is a global reality and Africa is no different. This has created an information imbalance that has helped to fuel the destructive idea that bad news is predominant in Africa. The reality, however, is that Africans have many reasons to be optimistic about their future and are living the solutions that have yet to transfer to the governmental level.

Transferring the US’s largest permanent military base in Africa to China could cripple the US’s social, military and economic influence in the region. The tiny state of Djibouti is home to the US largest permanent military installation in Africa that includes 4,000 troops and a fleet of US assassination drones that run bombing missions in regional Muslim countries. Now, Djibouti has ordered the US to vacate its secondary Obock military base in the country in a bid to turn over the installation to the Chinese military and its contingent of 10,000 troops, raising major concerns in Washington, which holds the largest military base in Djibouti, Camp Lemonnier. The Horn of Africa nation, strategically located in the critical entrance from the Indian Ocean to the Red Sea, lies at the gatewa...

Julius Malema, the former president of the African National Congress’s Youth League, says his party ‘will run out of patience very soon’ and ‘will remove this government through the barrel of a gun.’ Could this tough talk be the start of a violent crisis for South Africa, a country already struggling under the weight of under-performance and political mismanagement? He is the self-proclaimed populist Commander of South African politics. Military-trained, brash, and charismatic, Julius Malema could yet be the ultimate thor...

The group aims to disrupt national elections planned for this year, undermine public confidence in the already controversial western-led peacekeepers and bring down Somalia’s weak Western-backed federal government. The country has suffered two decades of lawlessness, insurrection and invasion since the collapse of the Siad Barre dictatorship in 1991, earning it the label of 'failed state.' The security situation inside the country is deteriorating again as the militants, who control large swaths of rural south and central Somalia, battle to demonstrate they are still a force to be reckoned with. This edition of the program is about Nigerian government brutal evictions of a community. It talks about mass evictions, demolitions, the wider class tensions and the unsustainable capitalist system in Africa’s most populous country, which is an indication of the flagrant use of state power against defenseless citizens.

The Horn of Africa nation, strategically located in the critical entrance from the Indian Ocean to the Red Sea, lies at the gateway to the busy Suez Canal waterway and provides a port to neighboring landlocked Ethiopia. The US Defense Department pays Djibouti nearly $63 million per year for the use of the Camp Lemonnier military base, which also serves as one of the world's largest drone bases. South African politics is standing on the edge of a very slippery slope as President Jacob Zuma struggles with yet more revelations of inappropriate conduct in office. But now, another crisis. A comrade-turned-rival is threatening to unseat him, by any means necessary. Military-trained, brash, and charismatic, Julius Malema could yet be the ultimate thorn in Jacob Zuma’s side. After leaving the ANC to start his own political party, the Economic Freedom Fighters in 2013, it seems Malema, like many South Africans, is growing tired of the Rainbow Nation under Zuma’s leadership. With the recent Panama Papers revelations, numerous personal and political scandals, Zuma may well be on his way out, but is Malema the man to replace him? And could it be at the barrel of a gun as he predicts? The combined car bomb and suicide attacks in the Somali city of Baidoa that killed scores of people recently appear to be part of an accelerating offensive by al-Shabab. Britain has raised concerns by warning that it will deploy troops to assist Amisom, a move many believe to be the latest disguise for Western intervention. With the disputed elections on the horizon and a 20% cut in the Amisom budget, will things for Somalia go from bad to worse?
